Certified Nurse Assistant - Surgical Services
About the role
Meets the communication needs of the patient, all departmental staff, and referring offices. Prepares and compiles records in the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit). Facilitates and demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times. Provides basic nursing care and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean recovery environment under the direction of the charge nurse.

Responsibilities
- Answers phones, transfers calls, handles requests, and takes messages.
- Makes phone calls to patients when arrival times are changed and keeps the Charge Nurse updated as needed.
- Handles surgical schedules:
- Prints copies of the surgery schedule.
- Updates schedules daily.
- Prepares patient charts for final review by the Charge Nurse:
- Inserts paperwork, lab reports, EKGs, history & physicals, and physician orders.
- CNA Assigned to PACU I:
- Assists in admitting patients to the PACU I area.
- Attaches monitors and SCDs (Sequential Compression Devices).
- Empties and records foleys and drains.
- Applies warm blankets and ice packs to patients.
- Performs blood draws and blood sugar checks.
- CNA Assigned to PACU II:
- Assists patients to the bathroom and helps patients in getting dressed.
- Transports patients to their car.
- Ward Clerk Duties:
- Performs a chart audit for all patient charges.
- Maintains PACU forms, files, and supplies.
- Faxes physician orders.
- Calls in doctor appointments for patients.
- Stocks the following items:
- Carts, shelves, and supplies.
- Dietary items.
- Oxygen tanks.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) program.
- Current, unencumbered CNA certification.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification and renewal as required.
- Medical background and terminology preferred.
