About the role
The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for functioning as an assistant to the physician, optometrist, NP/PA, RN's, and LPN's in the areas of direct and indirect patient care, laboratory procedures, charging and medical records.
Responsibilities
- Avoids delays in patient care by organizing the nursing station and work area to facilitate good work flow.
- Organizes all written medical information for physician/nurses review and places in the record in correct order.
- Proof reads appropriate dictation.
- Answers phones for physician, nurse, and receptionist.
- Schedules appointments effectively and efficiently according to patient needs.
- Distributes mail and files miscellaneous office information, organizes all written communication.
- Orders all office and medical supplies using cost containment methods.
- Cleans exam rooms according to Infection Control Policies.
- Fulfills Clinic policies including the Nursing Dress Code Policy.
- Adheres to clinic performance standards.
- Interviews patients to determine chief complaints and documents information in medical record.
- Takes vital signs and documents results.
- Performs office procedures such as sterile urine cath, suture removal, staple removal, or removal of casts under the direction of a NP, PA, or physician.
- Orders diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures according to physician's orders.
- Prepares patients for physician exams.
- Gives patients instructions for home care, medications, etc. under N.P., P.A., or physician direction.
- Administers medications orally and subcutaneously under the direction of the N.P., P.A., or physician.
- Administers allergy injections only under the direct supervision of the physician prescriber of the antigen.
- Performs pre-certifications/referrals for insurance companies as necessary.
- Provides patient/family education and reinforces all patient teaching under provider’s direction.
- Calls in prescriptions to pharmacy, provides patient instructions, and documents under provider’s direction.
- Schedules procedures/surgeries as necessary.
- Complies with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
- Adheres to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
- Provides excellent customer service and adheres to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School graduate or GED preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program as required by the certifying body.
- Maintain RMA, CMA, or NCMA credentials according to requirements established by the certifying body.
- Provide copy of credentials to Human Resources prior to expiration of certification period.
- Maintain credentials through one of the following: American Med Techs (AMT), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Health Career Association (NHA), American Allied Health (AAH), or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).
- CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire date.
Qualifications
Works in office setting during the hours the Clinic is available to patients/families. Sitting vs. standing averages to 50-50%. Minimal lifting requirements. Occasional lifting required for orthopedics, geriatrics, and internal medicine.
Skills
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required. Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures is necessary.
