Responsibilities

  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and procedures, documenting all corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test performance, either independently or by notifying supervisors.
  • Perform a variety of laboratory procedures, utilizing both manual and automated methods in disciplines such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and others.
  • Maintain and document instrument and equipment maintenance daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of patient results before releasing or reporting them.
  • Recognize and account for age-specific variations in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are analyzed in the same manner as patient samples and collaborate only after reporting results to relevant authorities.
  • May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
  • Aid in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Comply with department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, assume responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • Assist with tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.

Qualifications

  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA.
  • Current and valid state license if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
