About the role
The Department Lab Shift Per Diem position at Olympia Fields Hospital requires individuals to perform only waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA. Responsibilities include adhering to laboratory procedures, following quality control policies, identifying and correcting issues, performing a variety of laboratory procedures, maintaining instruments, reviewing results, recognizing age-specific differences, ensuring proficiency testing compliance, assisting with venipuncture/capillary puncture, and developing/preserving laboratory policies.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests as per CLIA authorization
- Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results
- Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions when deviations occur
- Identify and address problems affecting test performance, either independently or by notifying supervisors
- Perform a wide range of laboratory procedures, including Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines as introduced
- Maintain and document instrument and equipment maintenance as needed
- Review patient results for accuracy before release or reporting
- Recognize and account for age-specific variations in expected results
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are analyzed similarly to patient samples and collaborate with other labs only after reporting results to relevant authorities
- Assist with venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups
- Aid in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures
- Comply with department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources
- In the absence of a supervisor, assume responsibility for the section or department during their shift
- May be assigned additional responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC
- Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director
Requirements
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred
- Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA
- Current and valid state license if the laboratory is located in a state where required

- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA
- Experience: Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required
