About the role

The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for accurately performing medical laboratory tests following established laboratory policies and procedures while adhering to performance and quality standards. Responsibilities include clinical instrument maintenance, new test and instrumentation development, and training other laboratory coworkers. The Lab Scientist actively participates in the overall functioning of the clinical laboratory, assuming leadership or member roles on committees and projects, and ensures the laboratory remains in continuous readiness for inspection. The role requires extensive knowledge of techniques, instruments, and basic medical sciences, as well as the ability to make independent decisions and provide guidance to coworkers.

Responsibilities

• Perform medical laboratory tests accurately according to established policies and procedures.
• Maintain clinical instruments and develop new tests and instrumentation.
• Train other laboratory coworkers.
• Participate in laboratory committees and projects, assuming leadership or member roles.
• Ensure the laboratory is in continuous readiness for inspection.
• Provide guidance to other laboratory coworkers and make independent decisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science, medical technology, or another major that qualifies as an equivalency according to CLIA 42CFR493.1405(b)(5)(i)(B).
• At the time of hire or promotion, must be a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (certification by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the National Credentialing Agency, the American Medical Technologists, or the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts).
• Alternatively, have 1 year of clinical laboratory experience performing non-waived patient testing and be required to pass a nationally recognized certification exam (AMT or ASCP) within 5 years and 6 months from the hire date.
• Visual acuity and color discrimination.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
