About the role

This is a part-time, temporary position (not eligible for benefits) providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students and internal partners of the Alamo Colleges. The interpreter reports to the Interpreter Services Manager and may be assigned to any campus or location as needed for deaf student access. Hours are 19 per week, hourly, with varied scheduling outside of Monday‑Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. based on student schedules. The supervising department is located at Interpreter Services, 2222 N. Alamo St., San Antonio, TX 78215. Funding source: Hard Money. Number of openings: 5. Qualifications

• Minimum Education and Experience: Completion of a formal training program after high school (e.g., graduation from an interpreter training program) and one year of experience performing ASL interpretation as a certified interpreter, or an equivalent combination of experience and education in certified interpreting.
• Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience performing ASL interpretation as a certified interpreter, or an equivalent combination of experience and education in certified ASL interpreting.
• Licenses and Certifications: Must possess and maintain a Texas Health and Human Services (HHS), Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Basic Certificate or comparable Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification. Comparable certification from other states, pending BEI certification, is acceptable but BEI certification must be completed within six months of hire. Individuals pursuing BEI certification may apply and must complete BEI certification within six months of hire.
• Additional Requirements: Valid driver license and insurability through the organization’s insurers; a Motor Vehicle Report is required in addition to a background check and drug screen.
