Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO) is the managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a USW bargaining unit position and will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of general tasks to assist in operations of surface equipment and systems as assigned, with some direction.
  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and policies.
  • Conduct frequent inspections of work area to assure that safe working conditions are maintained.
  • Promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions to management.
  • Operate and monitor equipment and systems in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist higher classified facility personnel with operation, testing, and maintenance of surface equipment and systems, as assigned, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitor and operate the Central Monitoring System, Transcom, and Weather Monitoring System.
  • Perform routine functions, such as tagout/lockout, log keeping, monitoring, and housekeeping in accordance with Conduct of Operations procedures.
  • Perform technical reviews/validation of procedures as assigned.
  • Obtain materials and supplies from warehouse/storage areas as required.
  • Perform similar and related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will be required to pass an oral board and maintain qualifications for Central Monitoring Room Operator (CMRO), Roving Watch, and Transcom Operator. Must be capable of meeting and maintaining physical ability to wear required Personal Proteive Equipment, including Respiratory Protection equipment.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalency is required.
  • One (1) year of operating experience is required. Operations is hands-on industrial-type operations, such as electrical, HVAC, blueprint reading, control room, diesel generator, high/low voltage switch gear, etc. It is not experience limited to administrative processing, analysis, and procedures, even if such work was completed at an industrial site.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances (see DOE Order 472.2 for additional information).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous WIPP Project experience is a plus.

Pay

Trainee pay rate is $38.94 per hour. After all standard qualifications have been met and maintained, the rate of pay is $50.08 with an annual increase in August to $51.33 (2026) per the CBA.
