About the role
This position in the Office of Marketing, Communications and Engagement develops and executes communications and marketing strategies, including account management, public relations, social media, and web content. The role supports the Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, which works with communities and partner organizations to improve health, expand access to services, and strengthen the rural workforce. Its programs address needs including farm family wellness, behavioral health and substance use, professional training, and community-based support.
Approximately 50% of the position’s effort will be dedicated to communications and marketing for the FARM SOS program (formerly Farm Family Resource Initiative), a grant-funded program of the Center. The remaining 50% will support Center-wide communications and the Center’s other programs. The employee will identify communication needs, develop creative marketing opportunities, and create content that supports the Center’s programs and goals.
This position is on-site only in Carbondale.
Responsibilities
- 50% Communications and Marketing Management
- Researches and gathers information about academic, clinical, and programmatic aspects, policies, events, or external outreach affecting operations.
- Drafts, edits, and verifies content for academic, clinical, or research communications.
- Assists department administration in developing internal communications materials and presentations.
- Manages promotions of public education, outreach, and special events.
- Serves as the lead marketing budget and campaign planner for the department.
- 20% Digital and Social Media Strategy
- Develops and manages digital and social media content and strategies to improve online presence.
- Manages and monitors online presence, including geo-targeted and paid campaigns.
- Creates and administers content for campaigns across multiple social media platforms.
- Measures and tracks social media growth, campaigns, and advertisements; recommends strategic changes.
- 20% Web Content Editing
- Serves as the primary web content editor for siumed.edu, siumed.org, and thehive.siumed.edu.
- Writes, edits, and manages content, including basic layout through content management systems.
- 10% Media Relations
- Plans and coordinates media relations activities, determining proper messaging and audience for the department.
- Serves as liaison between the academic/clinical department and outside media and partners.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
- One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
- Additional education, training, or work experience in the area of specialization may be required based on position needs.
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field may substitute for one (1) year of work experience.
Skills
- Knowledge of English language structure, grammar, and composition.
- Knowledge of recruitment practices, social media analytics, publishing tools, and web analytics.
- Knowledge of marketing principles, including strategy, product promotion, and sales techniques.
- Knowledge of media production, including social media platforms, communication techniques, and dissemination methods.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, presentation software, spreadsheet software, video creation/editing software, web page creation/editing software, and analytical/scientific software.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems.
- Skill in producing live social media coverage and verbal/written communication.
- Skill in identifying complex problems, evaluating options, and implementing solutions.
- Skill in time management, organizing work assignments, and responding to challenges.
- Ability to develop and execute marketing and strategic communications plans to achieve outcomes.
