CDOC Boiler Operator Supervisor CSTS I (Denver Complex)

About the role

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a Boiler Operator Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Denver Correctional Complex. The position ensures the safety and security of the general public, facility staff, and inmates; ensures safe and efficient boiler operations; supervises and trains inmate workers; and prepares inmates for community reentry.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites through clear and accurate communication, training inmates in proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment, and chemicals, and enforcing security procedures.
• Conduct work site searches and monitor workplace environment and inmate behavior, initiating verbal reprimands and physical control measures as needed.
• Perform inmate counts and transportation, responding to emergencies such as fights, fires, and escapes according to policy.
• Ensure the safe, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective completion of all phases of boiler house operations, conducting regular checks, readings, and maintenance on boilers and associated systems.
• Work closely with other trades such as plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, assisting in other projects as needed.
• Provide supervision of assigned inmate workers, setting work standards, hiring inmates, training, instructing, creating schedules, assigning work, and conducting job evaluations.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, tracking tool, equipment, and part usage, expenses, and waste to remain within budget.
• Ensure uninterrupted service in a high-stress, security-driven environment with mandatory reporting/logging guidelines.
• Perform intermediate keyboarding skills, manipulate electronic computerized programs, and communicate via computer-based email.

Requirements

Four (4) years of employment experience as a utility plant or boiler operator performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on steam or hydronic hot water boilers and associated pumps, motors, and plumbing and/or installing and repairing boiler systems. OR: Four (4) years of employment experience installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems which must include hot water boilers or steam boilers above 15 psi. OR: Combination of two (2) years of experience as described above with a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited, non-correspondence vocational or trade school resulting in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience.
