About the Role

The Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (CIS) focuses on patient safety and functions within the legal scope of practice, adhering to federal, state, and local laws, as well as institutional policies and guidelines. The CIS operates under their own education, licensure, and/or certification, assuming accountability for the quality of care provided to patients and their families. The role emphasizes continued competence, self-reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning.

Schedule

Full Time, Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:30 PM, with on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare team members to provide care for patients with heart-related conditions.
• Apply theoretical knowledge and technical expertise to operate specialized equipment and perform procedures consistent with their design and purpose.
• Assess patient situations, exercise professional judgment, and act in the best interest of the patient.
• Obtain and communicate pertinent patient information to aid physicians in diagnosis and treatment while recognizing the limits of the CIS scope of practice.
• Minimize radiation exposure to patients, self, and the healthcare team through expert use of equipment and techniques.
• Prepare patients and equipment for cardiac, endovascular/vascular, electrophysiology, and/or cardiothoracic diagnostic and interventional procedures.
• Assist in performing interventions such as stent management, catheterization, balloon angioplasty, intravascular ultrasound, balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, and fluoroscopy.
• Apply complex invasive cardiac, vascular, and cardiothoracic principles for both minimally invasive and open procedures.
• Demonstrate knowledge of cardiovascular and cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology.
• Perform pre- and post-procedure monitoring and address patient and family questions regarding care.
• Complete six hours of hospital-provided continuing education annually for Advanced Sterile Processing Certification, focusing on instrument decontamination, transportation, and reprocessing.
• Complete one additional hour of annual education and competency evaluation if deemed competent to reprocess transesophageal echocardiogram probes.

Requirements

• Graduate of a certified or degree-granting program or post-secondary educational program in a health science-related non-nursing field, such as:
  • Cardiovascular Technology
  • Ultrasound
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Paramedic/EMT
  • Other allied health professional degrees or certifications (considered but not guaranteed)
• Preferred: Actively pursuing Cardiovascular (CV) certification/registry while employed.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred within 6 months of hire.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak, and hear.
• Lifting limits: 35 lbs. for clinical staff and 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. Use of an assisted-lift device or assistance from another individual is required for lifts exceeding these limits.
