Casework Supervisor

About the Role

Assist the Detention Superintendent with administrative and supervisory responsibilities within a juvenile detention center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with intake procedures and screening juveniles immediately following arrival to determine appropriate handling of individual cases.
  • Implement and coordinate educational and recreational programs for juveniles during their stay.
  • Serve as a liaison with courts, the District Attorney’s office, law enforcement agencies, and other probation departments.
  • Assist in staff scheduling, including daily changes, and prepare monthly work schedules for detention shifts.
  • Direct and assist Lead Counselors and Detention Officers with their duties; counsel juveniles as needed.
  • Monitor and oversee security throughout the facility; advise the Superintendent of any problems.
  • Assist with handling and resolving emergency situations, including riots, altercations, fire, medical emergencies, and mechanical or operational issues.
  • Assist the Superintendent with ongoing training for detention staff, including annual CPR and First Aid Training and orientation of new employees.
  • Compile data and statistics for reports; prepare reports and submit required paperwork as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, job-related meetings, conferences, training sessions, educational seminars, and workshops.
  • Assume duties and responsibilities of the Detention Superintendent in their absence.
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed.

Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in behavioral sciences, sociology, criminal justice, or a related field approved by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission.
  • One year (24 hours) of graduate work (Master’s Degree preferred) or three years of experience in full-time casework counseling, community or group work in an approved social service, community corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons.
  • Minimum of 32 hours of evening and weekend work per schedule.

Skills

  • Knowledge of Jefferson County Juvenile Detention and Probation Department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Texas juvenile justice system, principles and practices of juvenile probation, and employee supervision.
  • Skill in supervising the day-to-day operations of juvenile detention officers.
