CARPENTER

This position is located in the Production Division of the Public Works Department, Portsmouth, VA, under NAVFAC Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
  • Set up and operate a wide variety of woodworking machines and tools, such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses.
  • Interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; measure and layout footings for structural foundations.
  • Produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.
  • Assemble items using a variety of joining techniques, including miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon; may also use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces and veneers.

Requirements

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position. Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the following job elements:

  • Constructing and repairing wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close fit and structural soundness, such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim.
  • Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine layout, work sequences, and types of lumber or special related materials needed.
  • Operating power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment, such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, routers, combustion-type saws, drill presses, and table saws.

You will work under the close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to ensure proper performance.
