Carpenter

Duties and Responsibilities

• Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
• Prepares layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers.
• Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, and marking gage.
• Shapes materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes.
• Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
• Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenters level.
• Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring.
• BUILDS stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
• Covers subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture.
• APPLIES shock absorbing and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
• FITS and installs pre-fabricated window frames, doors, door frames, and hardware.
• CONSTRUCTS forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
• ERECTS scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.

Qualifications

• High school diploma
• Three (3) years commercial construction experience
• Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
• Apply shop mathematics to solve problems
• Plan work and select proper tools
• Perform a variety of duties which may change often
• Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked
• Physically, workers must be able to:
• Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders
• Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
• Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials
• Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl
• See well (either naturally or with correction)
