Responsibilities

Position Summary: The APP will manage the pre-procedure and post-procedure cardiac care area, supporting patients undergoing a variety of cardiovascular procedures and diagnostic tests. Responsibilities include evaluation, management, and follow-up care for patients undergoing cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology procedures and ablations, pacemaker procedures, transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), cardioversions, and LINQ insertions. The APP will also perform and interpret stress tests and tilt table tests while collaborating closely with cardiologists, nursing staff, and other members of the cardiovascular team.

Clinical Care

• Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings.
• Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates/manages patient treatment plans in collaboration with supervising/collaborating physicians.
• Performs procedures, prescribes treatments and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, and may function as first or second assistant on operative cases within scope and job prerequisites.
• Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters.

Patient Education & Psychosocial Support

• Educates patients/families on care, treatment plans, side effects, and discharge plans in collaboration with supervising/collaborating physicians.
• Provides psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Information Management

• Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
• Protects patient information from unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure.

Quality Management

• Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
• Ensures compliance with healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
• Reports safety events and near misses, demonstrating high reliability organizational behaviors.

Professional Development

• Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and provides service-specific orientation.
• Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy.
• May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals, and mentor pre-PA/NP candidates.
• Collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects, and assists with protocol formation.

Requirements

• Current Connecticut APRN or PA license and applicable board certification.
• BLS and ACLS certification required.
• 1-2 years of cardiology experience as an APP preferred.
• Experience in a procedural or cardiovascular setting strongly preferred.
• Appointment to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
• Evidence of current competence to practice via reference letters from physicians and other practitioners.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
• Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Connecticut State Registered Nurse License and Nurse Practitioner License.
• Board specialty certification, as appropriate for position profile.
• DEA License, when indicated for pediatric or other specialized position profiles.
• PALS and NRP Certification, when indicated for neonatal care.
• Additional licensure, certifications, and/or continuing education credits may be required during employment based on position and specialty.

Schedule

• 10-hour shifts (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM).
• Per diem providers are expected to commit to a minimum of two shifts per month and maintain some availability around holiday periods.
• Half shifts may be available based on department needs, with additional opportunities to cover PTO and leaves of absence.
