Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY: The APP will manage the pre-procedure and post-procedure cardiac care area, supporting patients undergoing a variety of cardiovascular procedures and diagnostic tests. Responsibilities include evaluation, management, and follow-up care for patients undergoing cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology procedures and ablations, pacemaker procedures, transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), cardioversions, and LINQ insertions. The APP will also perform and interpret stress tests and tilt table tests while collaborating closely with cardiologists, nursing staff, and other members of the cardiovascular team.

• Clinical Care
  • Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures, prescribes treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, as well as professional competency standards.
  • May function as first or second assistant on operative cases, using fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
  • Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters.
• Patient Education & Psychosocial Support
  • Educates patients/families on care and recommended or available resources, including admitting instructions, treatment plans, side effects of treatments/medications, and discharge plans.
  • Provides psychosocial support to patients, their family members, and significant others in a caring, ethical, and professional manner.
• Information Management
  • Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
• Quality Management
  • Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
• Professional Development
  • Engages in projects to maintain and advance professional competency.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and provides service-specific orientation.
  • Reports safety events and near misses, demonstrating high-reliability organizational behaviors.
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals and mentor pre-PA/NP candidates.
  • Collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects, and assists with protocol formation.

Requirements

• Current Connecticut APRN or PA license and applicable board certification.
• BLS and ACLS certification required.
• 1-2 years of cardiology experience as an APP preferred.
• Experience in a procedural or cardiovascular setting is strongly preferred.
• APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
• Per diem providers are expected to commit to a minimum of two shifts per month and maintain some availability around holiday periods. Half shifts may be available based on department needs, with additional opportunities to cover PTO and leaves of absence.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
• Licensure:
  • Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), Connecticut State Physician Assistant License, ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated for position profile).
  • DEA License (when indicated for pediatric position profile), PALS (when indicated for neonatal care), NRP Certification.
  • OR Connecticut State Registered Nurse License, Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License, Board specialty certification (as appropriate for position profile), ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated).
  • Additional licensure, certifications, and/or continuing education credits may be required during employment based on position and area of specialty.

Schedule

10-hour shifts (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM). Per diem providers are expected to commit to a minimum of two shifts per month and maintain some availability around holiday periods. Half shifts may be available based on department needs.
