About the Role

The City of Farmington Hills offers half-day and full-day summer camps at multiple locations throughout the city, engaging over 500 campers weekly in quality general day camp and specialty camp opportunities, including sports, visual arts, music, theatre, dance, nature, field trips, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Program Development: Develop and implement diverse, engaging camp programs aligned with the City’s mission. Plan and lead age-appropriate theatre-based lesson plans, including games, team-building exercises, and art activities. Facilitate group discussions and encourage camper participation. Communicate lesson supply needs to leadership and maintain accurate attendance records.
  • Staff Relationships: Foster positive relationships with staff and campers, encouraging camaraderie and teamwork. Coordinate daily/weekly activities with camp assistants to ensure a seamless experience.
  • Supervision and Safety: Implement and enforce safety protocols to create a secure, healthy, and inclusive environment. Monitor camper well-being, address concerns promptly, and collaborate with staff. Assist with daily camp check-in and check-out.
  • Communication: Maintain open communication with campers, families, and staff. Report incidents, concerns, or achievements to supervisors. Address inquiries or feedback from families and stakeholders. Update camp leadership on activity progress and adjustments.

Requirements

  • Experience: Required experience in teaching or supervising theatre programs for children. Experience supervising peers is preferred. Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, or related fields is a plus. Experience in dance, music, or visual arts is encouraged.
  • Education: College degree required. Significant work experience in teaching theatre youth programs may substitute for a completed degree. A major in Dance, Education, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certifications and Skills: Must be 18 years old. Upon hire, proof of First Aid and CPR certification is required. Strong situational awareness, self-motivation, teamwork, organizational, and communication skills are essential.

Schedule

June 2026 – August 14, 2026 (Monday–Friday, 35+ hours per week). Must be available for the entire camp season, including training the week of June 25. Days off: Juneteenth and July 3.

Physical Demands

While performing duties, the employee is required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, and use hands or fingers to handle objects and reach with hands and arms. The employee may lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
