Camp Instructor Specialized - Dance

About the Role

The City of Farmington Hills offers half-day and full-day summer camps at multiple locations throughout the city, engaging over 500 campers weekly in quality general day camp and specialty camp opportunities, including sports, visual arts, music, theatre, dance, nature, field trips, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Program Development:
    • Develop and implement diverse and engaging camp programs aligned with the City’s mission and values.
    • Plan and lead educational, age-appropriate dance-based lesson plans, incorporating games and team-building exercises.
    • Facilitate group discussions and encourage camper participation.
    • Communicate lesson supply needs to leadership in a timely manner.
    • Maintain accurate attendance records.
  • Staff Relationships:
    • Foster positive relationships with staff and campers, encouraging camaraderie and teamwork.
    • Clearly communicate with camp assistants to coordinate daily/weekly activities for a seamless camp experience.
  • Supervision and Safety:
    • Implement and enforce safety protocols to create a secure, healthy, and inclusive camp environment.
    • Monitor camper well-being, address concerns promptly, and collaborate with staff as needed.
    • Assist with camp check-in and check-out each day.
  • Communication:
    • Maintain open and effective communication with campers, families, and fellow staff.
    • Promptly report incidents, concerns, or achievements to supervisors.
    • Address inquiries, feedback, or concerns from families and stakeholders.
    • Regularly update camp leadership on activity progress and address adjustments as needed.

Qualifications

  • Previous Work Experience:
    • Required experience in teaching or supervising dance programs for children.
    • Experience supervising peers preferred.
    • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, or related fields preferred.
    • Experience in theatre, music, or visual arts is a plus.
  • Education:
    • College degree required; major in Dance, Education, or a related field preferred.
    • Proven significant work experience in teaching Visual Arts youth programs may substitute for a completed degree.
  • Special Training and Skills:
    • Must be 18 years old.
    • Upon hire, proof of First Aid and CPR certification is required.
    • Strong situational awareness, self-motivation, teamwork, organizational, and communication skills required.

Schedule

June 2026 – August 14, 2026 (Monday–Friday, 35+ hours per week). Must be available for the entire camp season, including training the week of June 25. Camps run June 15–August 14, with days off on Juneteenth and July 3.

Physical Demands

While performing duties, the employee is required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, and use hands or fingers to handle objects and reach with hands and arms. The employee may lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
