About the role
Working under the general direction of the Caltrans Maintenance Manager II, the Field Superintendent (CMAS) provides direction and oversight of all maintenance supervisors, crews, and activities within the assigned area of responsibility. The incumbent directs District Field Maintenance and coordinates with Special Crews, and ensures that all Department safety practices are in compliance with District, Department, State, and federal policies.

Requirements
- Valid Class C California Driver's License (required)
- Valid Class A Driver's License (desirable)
- Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements/restrictions — CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements/restrictions must be provided on application
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to travel overnight occasionally
- Eligibility for hire may be determined by score on the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent exam; candidates must be on the state examination list (or have transfer, reinstatement, voluntary demotion, SROA, Surplus, LEAP, or Training & Development eligibility)
- Minimum Qualifications per the Classification Specification must be met and will be verified prior to interview/appointment
- If basing eligibility on education, unofficial transcripts/diploma must be included; foreign transcripts/degrees require a U.S. equivalency report evaluation (from NACES or AICE member agencies)
- Birthdates and social security numbers must be redacted from submitted documents
Pay
Monthly salary range: $7,306.00 – $9,068.00. New-to-state candidates will be hired at the minimum of the classification (or alternate range if applicable). Note: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions of 2%–4.62% under the Personal Leave Program (PLP); the listed ranges may not reflect these reductions.
