About the role
The Technician I position within the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment provides routine technical assistance for an agroforestry research and education program. Duties include seed sourcing and collection, germination trials, greenhouse monitoring and maintenance, seedling planting and monitoring, daily care and measuring, and record-keeping and reporting.
- Maintain databases and perform preliminary data analysis.
- Assist with greenhouse duties through the summer and fall, into December.
- Collaborate with the Fall Agroforestry class starting in late August, providing assistance with class instruction.
Responsibilities
Components of the program activities will include assisting with:
- Seed sourcing and collection.
- Germination trials.
- Greenhouse monitoring and maintenance.
- Seedling planting and monitoring.
- Daily care and measuring.
- Record-keeping and reporting.
Requirements
High school diploma and up to 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination. Prior experience in a laboratory setting. Prior knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling. Experience with Microsoft office suite – including Word, PowerPoint and Excel and familiarity with Outlook. Ability to communicate verbally and written with faculty, staff and students. Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business. Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities. Experience working with inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing programs. Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing. Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds. Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Qualifications
The Technician must have the knowledge and experience necessary to identify, propagate, work with, care for, and maintain a variety of agroforestry-related plants. Applicants with demonstrated ability to communicate and share data and their botanical knowledge with undergraduate and graduate students will be preferred.
Skills
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Pay
This is a part-time position at 50% FTE. The pay rate is $22.70 - $23.56 per hour.
Schedule
This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.
