About the role

Schedules, supervises, and coordinates the construction and maintenance of company facilities, including gas mains, services, regulator stations, large meter sets, and related systems. Inspects the work of company crews and contractors to ensure facilities are installed according to applicable specifications, codes, and regulations. Performs leak investigations and subsequent repairs to company gas facilities. Directly supervises a Construction & Maintenance (C&M) crew.

Responsibilities

• Supervise new construction and maintenance activities, including installation, repair, and relocation of mains, valves, services, regulator stations, and large commercial and industrial meters.
• Oversee maintenance work in response to leak surveys or requests from Corrosion, Measurement, and/or Customer Service departments.
• Ensure work meets or exceeds internal and external customer satisfaction standards.
• Foster communication and teamwork in a diverse work environment; lead by example.
• Assist in developing and participating in programs related to safety, public liaison, and emergency response.
• Ensure work conforms to federal safety codes (DOT Part 192, 199), state and local statutes, and company standards.
• Provide input to management to modify programs for pipeline safety compliance.
• Supervise programs to operate and maintain distribution facilities; stay updated on internal operational requirements.
• Respond to and supervise emergency conditions throughout the local service area.
• Perform all types of pipe joining procedures, including arc welding, P.E. electro-fusion, oxy/acetylene welding, solvent cement, and mechanical joining (varies by Foreman A or B).
• Interpret construction drawings for dimensions, angles, offsets, connections, and material specifications.
• Operate gas detectors to determine the presence, concentration, and source of possible leaks in the gas system.
• Excavate and repair gas leaks on mains and services.
• Fabricate and install meter sets, regulator stations, meter barricades, and chain-link fencing around regulator stations.
• Install, repair, and relocate gas mains and services.
• Install anodes, rectifiers, and other appurtenances for corrosion control.
• Perform periodic valve maintenance as required by the emergency plan.
• Conduct system surveillance and patrolling; monitor and maintain odorant stations.
• Ensure trenches are properly braced to protect workers and avoid damage to underground facilities.
• Take necessary steps to ensure public and worker safety in emergency situations involving uncontrolled gas escape.
• Ensure vehicles, equipment, and tools are properly maintained and serviced per DOT FWHA requirements.
• Complete and review all associated paperwork and documents regarding pipeline installation.
• Operate job-related equipment, including jackhammer, compactor, holiday detector, line locator, backhoe, tapping and stopping equipment, CGI and Flame Pak, welding machine, forklift, Scott Air Pak, pipe beveling machine, boring equipment, P.E. electro-fusion equipment, grinders, and two-way radios.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• 1–3 years of experience in the natural gas industry.
• Must obtain and maintain all required welding (API-1104) and pipe joining certifications (multiple and appendix C).
• Working knowledge of tapping equipment (TDW, Mueller), heavy equipment use, metering, and regulation.
• Proficiency in construction and maintenance practices in distribution systems, including knowledge of maps, plans, construction, service, design, and utility construction-related functions.
• Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures.
• Leadership skills to manage a successful and diverse team, including the ability to respond to, supervise, and perform safety-sensitive operational and maintenance emergency functions.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Good working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations (Part 199, 192) relating to the natural gas industry.
• Ability to learn and understand local municipal and state codes and regulations.
• Valid Arizona CDL driver’s license.
• Must pass company pre-employment and DOT/RSPA/FWHA random drug testing as required.
• Ability to work in all types of adverse weather conditions and, at times, in a blowing gas environment using SCBA equipment.
