About the Role

The Cardiac Catheterization Technologist is a technical resource and provides scrub assistance to cardiologists in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional cardiac and peripheral vascular procedures. This role prepares for and performs all cardiac and vascular imaging procedures, troubleshoots minor equipment malfunctions, maintains accurate patient and equipment records, and ensures appropriate supply levels.

Responsibilities

• Organizes, plans, and directs activities relating to patients and procedures for their designated area.
• Serves as scrub assistant or circulates for diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, including structural heart repair (e.g., pulmonary and aortic valvuloplasty, VSD, ASD, PFO, PDA closures).
• Serves as scrub assistant or circulates for transcatheter valve replacement, MitraClip, and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion procedures; participates in clinical trial studies.
• Serves as scrub assistant or circulates for implant procedures such as Implantable Cardioverter-defibrillator.
• Sets up, maintains, and operates rotational atherectomy (Rotablator) and thrombolysis (EKOS) equipment.
• Sets up, maintains, and operates all interventional electrophysiology equipment for ablation, trans-septal ablations, mapping, and electrophysiology studies.
• Assists in cardiovascular tests and records patients' hemodynamic activity using specialized electronic test equipment and laboratory instruments.
• Monitors and documents all physiological monitoring/recording equipment and actions during procedures.
• Recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic waveforms; alerts credentialed providers and team members during procedures.
• Manages patient arterial and venous access sites post-procedure, including removal of sheaths and safe management of hemostatic devices.
• Prepares, maintains, and operates ventricular assist devices and Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps.
• Prepares, maintains, and operates Intracardiac Echocardiography (ICE), IVUS, and ultrasound machines.
• Adjusts technical factors in proportion to patient age and body part being examined while minimizing radiation exposure.
• Assists in training and guidance of technologists cross-training in the Cath Lab department.
• Confirms patient identification by checking name and birthdate.
• Reviews physician notes and special instructions with cardiologists and patients to ensure safety and appropriateness.
• Recognizes emergency situations, initiates codes, and administers aid as needed.
• Provides radiation protection to patients, staff, and self according to prescribed safety standards.
• Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination.
• Records pertinent patient information, completes all required paperwork, and ensures images are archived on the cardiology PACS.
• Performs billing functions accurately and timely.
• Maintains Cath Lab rooms and workstations in a neat, orderly, and prepared state; ensures exam rooms are stocked with supplies.
• Assists with ordering and stocking department supplies and equipment.
• Participates in after-hours uncontrolled standby and call-back; required to use a pager while on duty and standby.
• Performs other related duties, tasks, or projects as assigned (e.g., scheduling, transport, clerical).
• Assists in maintaining cooperative relationships with other departments, medical staff, and employees.
• Uses the chain of command appropriately to communicate concerns.
• Adapts to changing procedures and goals positively and cooperatively.
• Exhibits organizational skills and utilizes time efficiently.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program.
• 2 years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist; previous angiography or cardiac cath experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Electrophysiology (EPS, A-Fib/SVT/VT ablation, 3D Mapping) experience.
• Interventional peripheral vascular (PTA, Stent, Laser atherectomy, Carotid Stenting) experience.
• Structural heart repair (TAVR, TMVR-MitraClip, Watchman, Pulmonic Valve insertion, Septal Closure) experience.
• Cardiac Support device (IABP, Impella, Tandem Heart, ECMO) experience.
• Advanced ARRT Certification in Vascular, Cardiac, or Cardiovascular Radiography.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.

Required Licenses/Certifications

• Certified Radiologic Technologist (CA DPH).
• Radiologic Technologist Fluoroscopy Permit (CA DPH).
• Radiography (ARRT).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
• Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – if no card upon hire, must be obtained within 30 days and maintained.

Pay

The hourly rate range for this position is $49.30 – $83.81. When extending an offer of employment, factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal/state/local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market considerations are considered.
