About the role
Evaluate commercial loan and lease applications, adjudicate new credit requests, and handle renewals over $100,000. This role ensures customer credit requests are processed in accordance with bank policy and Business Banking underwriting guidelines to deliver superior customer service and meet Service Level Agreements.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate commercial loan and lease applications received from banking officers, brokers, and directly from customers.
- Assess credit facilities including secured and unsecured term loans, commercial mortgages, lines of credit, letters of credit, and equipment leases.
- Analyze each loan applicant’s financial condition, cash flow, and credit history to make appropriate loan decisions within individual lending authority.
- Demonstrate understanding of governmental credit support available to small business loans (e.g., SBA programs).
- Present loan requests to senior credit officers for decisions when appropriate.
- Adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies.
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and issues raised by external regulators.
- Train new lending officers and junior Loan Specialists to ensure consistency and quality in department operations.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
- May mentor or supervise junior members of the department, as necessary.
Requirements
- BS in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance preferred.
- 3–5 years of previous commercial or business lending experience required.
- Working knowledge of financial statements, tax returns, and credit reports.
- Knowledge of current banking regulations pertaining to credit and collection.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.

- Ability to consistently maintain a high level of professionalism and service when dealing with loan and lease sources.
- Ability to work under critical time constraints.
- Ability to function professionally at various levels (clients, management, peers, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA desirable.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $26.00 – $43.34 hourly (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
