Bus Monitor
Responsibilities
- Supervise students while riding the school bus and maintain appropriate behavior.
- Aid students as they board and exit the bus safely.
- Secure wheelchairs, safety vests, and other student safety equipment as needed.
- Provide assistance to students with disabilities or special needs in accordance with district procedures.
- Communicate concerns regarding student behavior or safety to the bus driver and Transportation Director.
- Assist with emergency evacuation procedures when necessary.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, further education in a related field is a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with students of all ages.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Ability to meet all district and state requirements for school transportation personnel, including passing all required background checks and a Bus Monitor Physical.
Pay
The starting rate for the 2026-2027 school year is $15.71 per hour with IMRF (this is subject to change based on our new negotiated collective bargaining agreement).
Appendix X of the existing MSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement is attached (our existing 4-year collective bargaining agreement expired at the end of the 2025-2026 school year and we will be negotiating a new agreement that will begin with the 2026-2027 school year).
Full-time employees working over 30 hours per week, will also be eligible for insurance benefits (summary of 2026 Employee Benefits is also attached).
Schedule
Route times are 6:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., with an as needed mid-day Pre-K route that runs from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The Bus Monitor position typically works 25 hours per week with opportunities to pick up additional hours if desired.
