Bus Driver Delegate

About the Role

Perform the duties of a bus driver while assisting with organizing and conducting behind-the-wheel training sessions for original and renewal drivers. Responsibilities include conducting school bus safety and evacuation drills, scheduling and dispatching school bus routes, and assisting with route development.

Responsibilities

• Safely drive a school bus over designated routes according to daily time schedules.
• Maintain good order among students on buses and follow District Policy regarding student discipline.
• Pick up and drop off students, escorting them across streets or roadways as necessary.
• Transport students and teachers on field trips, choosing routes and adhering to schedules.
• Maintain records of mileage driven and recommend route or stop changes to the Supervisor of Transportation.
• Assist in scheduling an efficient routing system, assigning daily bus routes, and managing extra trips.
• Attend scheduled safety meetings and conduct school bus safety and evacuation programs for students.
• Report incidents affecting student safety to the Supervisor of Transportation.
• Answer phone calls regarding student, route, and driver information, and handle emergencies following proper procedures.
• Instruct bus drivers in the proper operation of school transportation vehicles and qualify drivers on all district buses.
• Plan, coordinate, organize, and conduct behind-the-wheel bus driver training programs.
• Inspect vehicles using a prescribed checklist to maintain safe operating conditions and advise on needed repairs.
• Perform daily vehicle maintenance tasks such as cleaning windshields, headlamps, tail and turn lamps, mirrors, sweeping, and washing buses.
• Clean the complete interior of buses, including under seats, annually.
• Assist the Supervisor of Transportation with new employee orientation and other personnel activities.
• Perform other duties as required to support transportation operations.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Five years of experience as a school bus driver.
• Education and training necessary to maintain required certificates and licenses.
• Valid California Class A or B Driver’s License with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsements.
• California School Bus Driver Certificate.
• Valid CDE Delegate Behind-the-Wheel Trainer Certificate.
• First Aid Certificate.
• Department of Transportation DL-51 (Medical) Certificate.
• Compliance with pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing per the Omnibus Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Working Conditions

• Use proper lifting methods, with a maximum lift of 50 lbs or carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
