Travis County’s Office of Security & Protection is seeking a dedicated Building Security Supervisor/Coordinator to lead a team in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, and facilities. This role oversees daily security operations, ensures compliance with safety protocols, and provides leadership that fosters professionalism and accountability.

About the role

Functions as a working supervisor overseeing Security Officers who provide basic building security for County facilities. Manages shifts during normal business hours, after hours, weekends, and holidays. Assigns equipment and vehicles, schedules officers to posts and/or patrol routes, and provides controlled access in County facilities. Manages private security contracts and performs specialized administrative, skilled, or technical tasks. Security of employees and the public is a major element of this role.

This is the third in a series of three security-related job classifications within the Maintenance job family. It is distinguished by the addition of supervisory duties and responsibilities, including accountability for the security of employees and the public visiting County buildings. A flexible work schedule may be required to meet departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns duties to security crew members and maintains work schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage of all county buildings.
  • Inspects work for quality and explains needed improvements in performance.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and any required disciplinary actions.
  • Provides on-the-job training for assigned crew members in proper security techniques and procedures.
  • Monitors private security contracts and ensures compliance with guard availability and workstation coverage.
  • Operates radio and maintains contact with other posts; monitors radio for routine and emergency transmissions.
  • Monitors security cameras to track normal movement and identify security violations in all areas.
  • Provides surveillance of activity and distributes security access cards as needed.
  • Ensures monitoring of heating and air conditioning systems for proper operation during non-business hours.
  • Ensures checks are performed within facilities for leaks during rainstorms.
  • Monitors buildings and properties for equipment failure or vandalism; notifies proper emergency contacts for repairs.
  • Reviews daily logs, reports, and addresses situations requiring follow-up; documents incidents, accidents, or performance issues.
  • Assists in hiring and promoting new building security staff.
  • Attends training and certification courses as required to maintain necessary certifications and skills.
  • Communicates with County department management, staff, and parking vendors regarding parking issues or policy changes.
  • Addresses employee inquiries about parking status, changes in parking areas, revised restrictions, and other parking-related information.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining parking-related policies, procedures, and practices for effective parking management.
  • Monitors County parking facilities through audits, staff counts, and enforces the County Parking Policy and other policies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three (3) years of building security or related experience, with one (1) year in a lead or supervisor position.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance, including fingerprint clearance.

Work Environment

  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, and squatting to perform essential functions.
  • Subject to extreme temperatures, outside elements, and extensive walking.
  • May be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Schedule

  • Must be flexible to work AM, PM, or overnight shifts; shift differential for PM and overnight hours.
  • Works some holidays, nights, and weekends.
