Job Requirements

  • Responsible for meeting all state and locally mandated code compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Reviews all plans and specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Applies knowledge of building codes, policies, and procedures to the day-to-day functions of the building department.
  • Aids in the development and administration of department and division goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with our clients in this area and is responsible for ensuring that we deliver the highest level of customer service.
  • Attends department and community meetings as required by the client.
  • Prepares program budget and monitors work to ensure that funds and staff time are used effectively and efficiently; analyzes work flow, assignments, priorities and staffing levels.
  • Analyzes, reviews, and prepares code amendments or supplements.
  • Performs some plan reviews both commercial and residential.
  • Supervises building department staff including Building Codes, Code Enforcement and Rental Housing Programs.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of local building code regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Have basic knowledge of land development processes including zoning regulations, land entitlements, and public infrastructure construction.
  • Show solid computer skills and experience using MS Office programs.
  • Show excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exercise initiative and display independent judgment.
  • Be self-directed and self-motivated.

Education/Certification/Experience

  • State of Michigan licensed Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plans Examiner.
  • Inspection and plan review experience for commercial and residential structures.
  • Client and team management experience in a building department setting preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record.
