Key Responsibilities

  • Planning, supervising, and coordinating the Building Division’s activities and operations.
  • Authorized enforcement officer of the Building Code, overseeing the location, design, materials, construction, alteration, repair, equipment, maintenance, use, occupancy, removal, and demolition of buildings, structures, and appurtenances within the Village of Tinley Park.
  • Performing a broad range of building, permitting, and code administrative functions, including plan review, building inspections, code administration, interpretation, and code compliance.
  • Working directly with property owners, architects, contractors, builders, and residents to explain code requirements, answer code-related questions, and diagnose and resolve project-specific permitting and construction related problems.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in building engineering, architecture, or construction engineering preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of five to seven years in the building design or construction industry, building or housing inspection, code enforcement, or closely related field with at least three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • ICC Residential Building Inspector certification required.
  • Within 6 months, ICC certification as a Residential Energy Inspector and ICC Commercial Building and Commercial Energy Inspector or ICC Commercial Combination is also required.
  • Outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and self-motivation.
  • Familiarity with principles, practices, and objectives of municipal government.
  • Customer service focus, knowledge of a wide range of residential and commercial building applications, and ability to manage effectively during periods of high volume.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to motivate a dedicated staff, and focus on efficient and effective management of daily operations.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience performing residential and commercial plan reviews in building, accessibility, electrical, energy, and mechanical aspects of building design.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively communicate technical and non-technical information.
