Building Official
About the role
The City of Portland, Texas, is seeking a motivated and customer service focused multi-tasker to join their team as Building Official. The purpose of this position is to plan, review, organize and direct the building department by inspecting new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance to building, grading, and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform inspections to meet code requirements on the quality of work done by contractors; note any code violations and verify compliance with code.
- Develop and implement a backflow program and maintain records of annual backflow reports.
- Develop and implement a Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) program and maintain records and enforcement.
- Review permit applications, submittals, and progress by overseeing all aspects of construction and occupancy.
- Closely coordinate and communicate with all other Public Works and Development divisions and staff, Fire Department and Administration to ensure communications and teamwork focused approaches are maintained.
Requirements
This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.
Qualifications
- Valid Drivers’ License with a clean record.
- At least 3 years’ experience as a Building Inspector, City Inspector, or a combination of the two.
- Affiliate degree or equivalent (preferred).
- Excellent customer service and written communication skills.
- Must successfully obtain Plumbing, ICC, Mechanical, Electrical, and Building certifications within 6 months of employment.
- Additional preferred areas of expertise or experience should include development, implementation and support for F-O-G and Backflow programs; GIS; code enforcement initiatives; and other “Team” duties as required.
