Building Maintenance worker

About the Role

Performs a variety of moderately complex preventive maintenance tasks, repairs, and additions to County buildings, facilities, and equipment. This role involves multiple skill areas, including carpentry, HVAC, painting, plastering, masonry, plumbing, electrical repairs, and machine servicing. This classification may require work in secure facilities and a flexible work schedule to meet departmental needs.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance routines on equipment, building components, and facilities.
• Conducts periodic and routine walk-through inspections of assigned facilities, identifies work requirements, submits service requests, and performs assigned work.
• Researches and estimates time and materials needed; records time and materials used.
• Requests tools, equipment, supplies, and materials required for tasks.
• Monitors expenditure of supplies and controls inventory of equipment and tools.
• Makes electrical, plumbing, masonry, and carpentry repairs.
• Services and repairs heating and air-conditioning systems.
• Replaces broken glass and installs/replaces light fixtures and switches.
• Remodels buildings and facilities; may build cabinets and shelves.
• Prepares surfaces for painting, paints, and seals building surfaces and equipment.
• May disassemble/assemble and move furniture and equipment.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or G.E.D.
• Three (3) years of building maintenance experience, including preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment, buildings, and facilities; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Preferred: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification or must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.

Knowledge of:

• Policies, practices, procedures, and methods of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry repair.
• Applicable safety practices and regulations.
• Equipment and tools used in maintenance and repair functions.
• Federal, State, Local, and County laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
• Computer equipment, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and software packages.

Skill in:

• Carpentry, painting, plastering, masonry, plumbing, electrical repairs, installations, and machine servicing.
• Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and performing maintenance and repair needs.
• Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
• Applying safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
• Working collaboratively in a team environment.
• Verbal and written communication.

Ability to:

• Understand and follow instructions and communicate effectively.
• Safely and correctly apply building and equipment maintenance and repair techniques, and operate tools and equipment.
• Work independently and efficiently.
• Manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, officials, outside agencies, and the public.

Work Environment

• Physical requirements include lifting up to 100 pounds and carrying up to 75 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity.
• Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, and balancing.
• Exposure to extreme temperatures, outdoor elements, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, hazardous chemicals, foul odors, animal/human waste, insects, and rodents.
• May require working at heights from ladders and scaffolds.
• Employees may be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Schedule

Up to 30 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
