About the role
Performs responsible skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, and installation of electrical systems in City buildings; performs related work as required.
Responsibilities
- Manages all activities of electrical maintenance;
- Performs installation of electrical wiring and equipment in City buildings;
- Investigates problems involving electrical systems and recommends corrective actions.
Prepares estimates and material lists for wiring jobs based on job requirements, plans, and specifications;
Performs routine inspection and maintenance of electrical systems in City buildings;
Keeps accurate daily records and reports regarding work performed, materials used, and system status;
Assists other skilled workers in a variety of assignments such as carpentry, plumbing, and painting activities as required;
Instructs and trains subordinate personnel.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of all standard practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the electrical trade;
- Complete knowledge of the use and characteristics of electrical materials and equipment;
- Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans, or specifications;
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions and complete daily reports;
- Some knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of building construction;
- Ability to plan work related to electrical lines and appurtenances;
- Ability to communicate work directives to building maintenance technicians and other city staff assisting with work on electrical lines and appurtenances;
- Skill in the use of electrical instruments and related appliances and equipment;
- Full and complete knowledge of all applicable building codes, state, and federal regulations;
- Ability to work independently, make proper decisions, and restore service in a timely manner;
- Must be capable of working on systems that the supervisor may not have specific knowledge of;
- On-Call Requirement: Electrician is on call after hours to respond to emergency situations.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in the electrical maintenance field;
- OR Associate's Degree in Electrical or Electronic Technology with a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in the electrical maintenance field.

Special Requirements
- NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training certificates within 12 months of hire;
- Possession of limited or unlimited North Carolina Electric license upon hire;
- The employee must pull permits in their name or the license must be signed over to the City of Gastonia;
- Valid North Carolina driver's license;
- Special Requirements: Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Possession of a North Carolina Commercial Electrical Contractor License (Limited or equivalent as defined by state statute) is required.
