About the role
The position may be filled as a Breast Sonographer Level 1, 2, or 3, depending on individual experience, certifications, education, and other qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Utilizes advanced skill set and knowledge to perform diagnostic imaging on patient as ordered by a care provider under limited supervision.
- Ensures testing is performed safely and with the highest quality standards, maintaining a consistent focus on patient-centric care.
- Prepares patients for procedures and reviews clinical history to align with provider-ordered tests.
- Responds to inquiries from patients and family members, provides clear information regarding diagnostic testing and expected result timelines.
- Collaborates with team members across OU Health including Providers to provide exceptional patient care.
- Utilizes a variety of highly specialized imaging and ultrasound equipment and techniques to perform a diverse range of diagnostic imaging in accordance with established scope of practice guidelines.
- Conducts post-testing quality reviews without assistance to confirm that all required elements are completed, documented and align with departmental and accreditation standards.
- Transfers images and data to the appropriate electronic health system, enters technical data/findings and prepares study for reporting by physician.
- Performs quality control checks, cleaning, disinfecting and other equipment maintenance tasks per manufacturer instructions for use and other regulatory guidelines.
- Serves as a departmental preceptor to provide instruction and mentorship to new or less experienced team members.
- Aids in onboarding of new team members.
- Supports OU Health's academic partnerships by actively engaging in teaching of students in the radiologic program.
- Aids in quality assurance and performance improvement tasks as assigned.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge by preparing and presenting in-service trainings as requested by leadership.
- Supports the team by building skill sets to perform additional testing across the department such as bone density, QC, general diagnostic imaging and/or diagnostic procedures.
- May contribute to the development of policies, procedures and quality assurance methods.
Requirements
- Education: Graduate from an accredited sonography or imaging/radiology program as defined by ARDMS or ARRT. Completion of JRCERT accredited Military Educational Program will be accepted in lieu if program meets certification requirements to obtain ARMDS or ARRT certification.
- Experience: No prior experience required for Level 1; at least 3 years of breast imaging experience required for Level 2; at least 5 years of breast imaging experience required for Level 3.
- Licenses/Certifications/Registrations: BLS issued by the American Heart Association required; ARDMS or ARRT (RT) certification required within 1 year of hire for Level 1; ARDMS or ARRT (RT)(S) certification required for Level 2; ARDMS with Breast (BR) Specialty or ARRT (RT) with Breast Sonography (BS) certification required for Level 3.

- Applies advanced knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology related to mammography and radiologic technologies associated with imaging specialty credentialed to perform.
- Demonstrates advanced ability and skill to apply theory, practices and techniques to perform, post-process, analyze and annotate study data or procedure documentation independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and patient populations served.
- Demonstrates strong knowledge of and ability to apply HIPAA guidelines and standards.
- Ability to prioritize and complete work assignments in a timely manner.
