About the role

The Breast Sonographer for our Breast Imaging clinic performs all breast ultrasound imaging using sonographic equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images. These images support physicians in diagnosing medical conditions and guiding treatment decisions. The role involves close collaboration with patients to ensure their comfort and understanding throughout procedures, while maintaining timeliness, accuracy, proficiency, efficiency, and safety. The Breast Sonographer also assists physicians in assigned procedures, mentors students and fellow sonographers, and participates in departmental initiatives such as protocol development and process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced breast ultrasound examinations, including complex and specialty imaging studies, ensuring high-quality diagnostic results and patient safety (60%).
  • Maintain proficiency in emerging breast ultrasound technologies, diagnostic techniques, and procedural advancements through continuing education (10%).
  • Mentor and precept Level I technologists and students, providing guidance on scanning techniques, workflow efficiencies, and protocol adherence (5%).
  • Demonstrate leadership in departmental initiatives, including protocol development, process improvement, and equipment evaluation; serve as shift lead in the absence of the department supervisor (5%).
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards and accreditation requirements (e.g., Joint Commission, ACR, MQSA); assist with policy and protocol development (5%).
  • Participate in staff training, department meetings, and quality assurance initiatives (5%).
  • Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to enhance patient care and workflow efficiency (5%).
  • Assist in supply management, including ordering and inventory oversight, as needed (5%).

Requirements

  • Completion of a two-year hospital or college program accredited by the American Medical Association.
  • Must hold and maintain a Breast Ultrasound registry.
  • Less than 1 year of breast ultrasound experience required.
  • Required licenses:
    • RDMS-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS), or
    • ARRT-Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Skills

  • Advanced Breast Ultrasound Imaging Skills: Proficient in performing complex and specialty ultrasound exams with high diagnostic accuracy, ensuring patient safety and image quality.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge: Strong understanding of accreditation and compliance standards (e.g., Joint Commission, ACR, MQSA).
  • Leadership & Mentorship Abilities: Capable of mentoring and precepting Level I technologists and students, fostering professional growth and adherence to best practices.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to enhance patient care and streamline workflow efficiency.
  • Technical & Equipment Proficiency: Skilled in operating and troubleshooting ultrasound equipment while staying up to date on emerging technologies and procedural advancements.

Pay

$39.51 - $61.25 per hour.
