Branch Assistant - Children's & Teen - Main Library
About the Role
Join the team at the Allen County Public Library as a Part-Time Branch Assistant in our Teens Department at the Main Library in downtown Fort Wayne. This on-site position is a great opportunity to connect with teens and families, provide excellent customer service, and help create a welcoming environment where young people can learn, explore, and discover. You'll be part of a collaborative team that values integrity, teamwork, inclusion, and people-first service.
As a Branch Assistant in the Teens Department at the Main Library, you'll help create a positive and welcoming experience for teens and all library visitors. You'll interact with patrons throughout the day, helping them find library materials, use library services, and navigate the resources available to them. Working in a busy downtown library means no two days are exactly alike. You may help a teen find a great book, assist someone with a computer or other technology, answer a question about an upcoming program, or help a patron navigate a library service.
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, effective service to a diverse range of customers using patience, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- Help patrons find library materials, use library services, and navigate resources.
- Assist with technology, including computers, automated library systems, and related software and equipment.
- Contribute to maintaining a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for teens and other library visitors.
- Maintain confidentiality when handling patron records and transactions.
- Accurately maintain records and complete routine administrative tasks.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
- Work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
- Use good judgment and remain calm and professional in a busy public-service environment.
Requirements
- Comfortable working with a diverse range of people and providing helpful, friendly customer service.
- Able to learn automated library systems, electronic tools, personal computers, and related software and equipment.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
- Exercise tact, patience, and discretion when working with patrons.
- Work effectively as part of a team and build positive working relationships.
Experience working with teens, in a library, or in a customer-service environment is helpful, but we're especially interested in candidates who are friendly, dependable, approachable, adaptable, and excited about helping people.

Schedule
This position will work 28 hours per week and will include a mix of day, evening, and weekend hours.
