About the role

This entry-level position involves assisting other technicians and engineers with hands-on fabrication and testing of hardware in a laboratory environment. The Associate Technician will be assigned a mentor who will provide training on equipment usage with the objective of developing the ability to work independently.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • General fabrication skills: Develop proficiency in machining, soldering, brazing, and welding. Machining includes modifying simple components from aluminum, copper, or steel using a milling machine or lathe (drilling, tapping, fly cutting, grinding, installing hardware such as heli-coils and threaded inserts). Soldering involves bonding aluminum and copper components using a torch, hot plate, or oven with appropriate flux and solder. Brazing requires using a torch or furnace and selecting the appropriate process. While a full-time welder handles most welding, the technician will develop an understanding of welding processes and design, and may occasionally perform welding.
  • Leak checking: Effectively leak check hardware using a helium mass spectrometer in vacuum, sniffing, and bagged modes.
  • Electrical skills: Perform minor electrical work to set up tests, including wiring heaters, setting up variacs and watt-meters, and measuring current and resistance to calculate power, all performed safely.
  • Hardware assembly: Fabricate hardware and prototypes per instructions or engineering drawings, ensuring hardware meets specifications, performs to requirements, and has a craftsman-like appearance.
  • Interpret drawings: Read and interpret drawings per geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994), with careful attention to tolerances and special finishes.
  • Quality: Actively learn and follow ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards, including obtaining First Article Inspection (FAI) certifications, preparing travelers, following fabrication procedures, obtaining Certificates of Conformance (C of C), and filing information in project folders.
  • On-time delivery: Complete and deliver work to internal and external customers according to committed dates.
  • Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and organized work area and laboratory daily, return tools to their original locations, and dispose of or store excess materials and fixtures at project end.
  • Laboratory testing: Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate performance against customer specifications using developed plans and test procedures. Analyze test data, accurately record results in a laboratory notebook or electronic database, and provide recommendations for changes to test methods based on understanding of measured results.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience: 2-year technical degree from an accredited trade school, college, or university with less than 5 years of work experience.
  • Language skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures and instructions; write reports, business correspondence, and procedures; and effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and employees.
  • Mathematical skills: Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts (add, subtract, multiply, divide) to tasks such as calculating heat pipe performance, determining test results, analyzing variances, and applying correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Reasoning ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization, and to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

Physical demands

While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. The position requires occasional travel on airplanes and automobiles to visit vendors, carry out tests at facilities, repair equipment, and deliver hardware.

Work environment

While performing duties, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level is usually moderate.
