About the Role
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way, connect readers with the right titles and products, and maintain the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the store.
Responsibilities
- Greet and assist customers by answering questions and helping them find books and products.
- Unpack, shelve, and organize deliveries to maintain store presentation.
- Operate registers efficiently to provide quick and friendly service.
- Tidy and maintain displays, ensuring the store remains visually appealing.
- Develop merchandising skills for books, gifting, toys, and other product categories.
- Support the café team and assist with receiving and shelving deliveries.
- Locate books and products accurately using store tools and knowledge.
- Understand and apply loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
- Build expertise in fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational toys, games, music, movies, and newsstand products.
- Make effective book recommendations and support key sales initiatives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders).
- Collaborate with the team to meet store needs, including flexibility with scheduling and potential work at other locations.
Requirements
- Reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Flexibility to fill scheduling gaps, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Positive, willing, and energetic approach to tasks, with a strong work ethic.
- Supportive and considerate attitude toward colleagues and customers.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to store needs.
- Comfort with technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and store programs.
- Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods, bend, lift, and walk extensively.

- Knowledge of books, toys, games, and other products (developed on the job).

Pay
Starting hourly rate of $15.00, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
Schedule
The store is open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays. Flexibility to fill scheduling gaps is required.
