About the Role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way, connect readers with the right titles and products, and maintain the store’s attractive presentation and efficient operation.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers warmly, answer questions, and assist them in finding books and products.
  • Unpack, shelve, and organize deliveries while maintaining clean and visually appealing displays.
  • Operate registers efficiently to provide quick and friendly service.
  • Develop merchandising skills to present books, gifts, toys, and other products effectively.
  • Support the café team and assist with receiving, unpacking, and shelving stock.
  • Locate books and products accurately using store tools, personal knowledge, or colleague assistance.
  • Follow loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques to address theft or problematic behavior.
  • Build expertise in fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational toys, games, collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand products.
  • Make book recommendations and support key sales initiatives like Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure smooth store operations, including flexibility to work across different stores if needed.

Requirements

  • Reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Flexibility to fill scheduling gaps and adapt to store needs (early mornings to late evenings).
  • Positive, energetic, and willing attitude toward assigned tasks and teamwork.
  • Supportive and considerate behavior toward colleagues and customers.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and develop bookstore knowledge.
  • Comfort with technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and store programs.
  • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods, bend, lift, and walk extensively.

Benefits vary based on scheduled hours:

  • Under 20 hours per week: Employee Discount, EAP, and Sick Pay.
