About the Role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. Equally, you are an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and ensuring its efficient operation.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers in a cheerful and helpful manner, answering questions and assisting them in finding the right titles and products.
  • Unpack and shelve deliveries, maintain attractive store presentation, and ensure efficient store operations.
  • Operate registers quickly and efficiently to provide professional customer service.
  • Develop and apply merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
  • Support the receiving and unpacking of deliveries, and ensure accurate shelving.
  • Locate books and other products accurately using knowledge, tools, and resources like BookMaster.
  • Assist the café team when needed.
  • Understand and apply loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
  • Maintain and present books in an attractive manner across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s sections.
  • Make effective book recommendations and support key sales objectives such as Our Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders.
  • Build expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music, movies, and Newsstand to assist customers and maintain sections.
  • Demonstrate reliable and punctual attendance, flexibility in scheduling, and a positive, willing approach to work.
  • Support colleagues and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

Requirements

  • Prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and acquire knowledge in various store areas.
  • Ability to use technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays.
  • Ability to work in other stores if needed to support the wider team.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.

Skills

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective merchandising and visual merchandising skills.
  • Ability to operate registers competently and efficiently.
  • Book knowledge across various genres and categories.
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for books, toys, games, and other products sold in-store.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and supportively as part of a team.

Pay

An employee in this position can expect an hourly rate starting at $16.00, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
