About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You are also essential to maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and ensuring its efficient operation.

Responsibilities

• Unpack and shelve deliveries, tidy displays, and maintain store presentation.
• Operate registers quickly and professionally to provide excellent customer service.
• Master operational competencies, including:
  • Using technology such as registers, computers, tablets, and other tools efficiently.
  • Developing merchandising skills to maintain book and product presentation.
  • Supporting receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of deliveries.
  • Locating books and products using knowledge, tools, and BookMaster.
  • Assisting the café team when needed.
  • Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
• Engage in physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
• Collaborate with the wider team and potentially work in other stores if needed.
• Build expertise in books (fiction, nonfiction, children’s), educational toys, games, collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand products.
• Make effective book recommendations and support key sales objectives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders).
• Demonstrate "behaviors" such as reliability, punctuality, positivity, teamwork, and a willingness to learn.

Requirements

• Flexible availability, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Willingness to fill scheduling gaps and support team needs.
• Cheerful and helpful demeanor with customers and colleagues.
• Aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and knowledge.

Pay

Starting hourly rate of $15.25, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
