About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. Equally, you are an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and in ensuring its efficient running.

Responsibilities

• Unpack and shelve deliveries and tidy displays.
• Operate registers in a quick and friendly manner to ensure highly professional customer service.
• Demonstrate reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, filling gaps when possible.
• Maintain flexibility and responsiveness to store needs, including working early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays.
• Perform assigned tasks with purpose, energy, and reliability.
• Support and assist colleagues, showing kindness and teamwork.
• Assist customers cheerfully and proactively.
• Learn and master operational competencies, including:
  • Using technology such as registers, computers, tablets, and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
  • Developing merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
  • Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
  • Supporting the receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of deliveries.
  • Locating books and products accurately using knowledge, BookMaster, and available tools.
  • Assisting the café team when needed.
  • Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
• Engage in physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
• Collaborate with the wider team and work in other stores if needed.
• Build and apply book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books to maintain sections and present books attractively.
• Make effective book recommendations to customers and support key sales objectives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders).
• Develop expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music, movies, and Newsstand to assist customers and maintain sections.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Positive and willing attitude toward work.
• Aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire knowledge.
• Ability to demonstrate "behaviors" such as reliability, punctuality, and teamwork.
• Enjoyment of the bookselling role and commitment to advancing to Senior Bookseller with experience.
