About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You are also an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and ensuring its efficient operation.

Responsibilities

  • Unpack and shelve deliveries, tidy displays, and maintain store presentation.
  • Operate registers quickly and professionally to ensure high-quality customer service.
  • Demonstrate reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, with flexibility to fill gaps as needed (store hours include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays).
  • Approach work with positivity, energy, and a willingness to learn new skills.
  • Support and assist colleagues, showing kindness and teamwork.
  • Assist customers cheerfully, going above and beyond to meet their needs.
  • Master operational competencies, including:
    • Using technology such as registers, computers, tablets, and other tools efficiently.
    • Developing merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
    • Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
    • Supporting the receiving, unpacking, and shelving of deliveries accurately.
    • Locating books and products using knowledge, tools like BookMaster, and teamwork.
    • Assisting the café team when needed.
    • Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
  • Engage in physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
  • Collaborate with the wider team and potentially work in other stores if needed.
  • Build expertise in bookselling, including:
    • Developing knowledge of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books to maintain sections and make recommendations.
    • Supporting key sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders.
    • Gaining expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music, movies, and Newsstand.
    • Using this knowledge to maintain sections, assist customers, and support sales goals.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Advance to the next career step (Senior Bookseller) as you gain experience and demonstrate mastery of skills.

  • Part-time (less than 20 hours per week):
    • Sick pay: 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.

    • 24–34 hours of sick time per year based on scheduled hours.

Pay

This position offers an hourly rate starting at $21.65, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law. The pay range for this role goes up to $23.15 per hour.
