Biomedical Scientist

About the role:

A vacancy has arisen for a Fixed Term Full Time experienced Biomedical Scientist in our Blood Transfusion Department based at the North Middlesex University Hospital. To cover maternity leave.

North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London’s busiest acute hospitals, serving more than 350,000 people living in Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest. Every day, on average, we see 500 patients in A&E; 15 babies are born in our maternity unit; about 450 inpatients are cared for on our wards; about 50 patients have major or minor surgery in one of our 10 operating theatres; and about 800 people attend our outpatients clinics.

The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Service at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is provided by Health Services Laboratories (HSL). The HSL Haematology and Blood Transfusion department provide an essential 24/7 service to the patients under the care of North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. North Middlesex University Hospital has a SHT (Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team) caring for over 500 patients with inherited red cell disorders many of whom have complex, regular blood transfusion requirements.

• Work alongside other members of the laboratory rotational BMS, MLA and management team
• Aid in undertaking Haematology and Blood Transfusion investigations
• Provide a cross-site, 24/7 service

Shift patterns include:

• Day shifts: 08:45-17:15, 12:30-20:30
• Weekend shift: 08:00-20:30/09:00-13:00/09:00-17:00
• Night shift: 19:30-08:30

Key Duties:

• Work as part of a team undertaking some routine Blood transfusion testing
• Provide safe and reliable results and issue of blood and blood components
• Carry out day to day tasks in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and local standard operating procedures

Qualifications:

• HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist
• Working towards/completed an IBMS specialist portfolio/BBTS

Skills:

• Knowledge of Quality Management Systems such as Q-Pulse as a tool for incident and change management
• Detail oriented but also able to keep an eye on the bigger picture
• Friendly, approachable disposition with an ability to make reasoned judgements and be proactive rather than reactive
• Open to ideas and discussion with others
• Commitment to the role of a BMS and what this entails in terms of patient care and service provision
• Flexibility and willingness to help colleagues in the team
• Able to articulate well with Internal and external staff and address queries in a professional manner
