Biology Instructor, Part-time Adjunct Pool

Temporary adjunct instructor position at the main campus in Ridgecrest, CA. Applications remain active for up to two years and may be used to fill immediate or future openings.

About the Role

The Kern Community College District is seeking part-time, hourly adjunct instructors to teach a full range of Biological Science courses. Assignments may include day, evening, or weekend classes at various campus sites, large classes, distance learning, and multiple teaching methodologies. Instructors are expected to participate in student recruitment, maintain subject matter currency, develop and revise curriculum, and engage in departmental, college, and discipline-specific professional activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in Biological Science courses using diverse teaching methodologies
• Teach at various campus sites, including day, evening, or weekend classes
• Participate in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs for the Science department
• Maintain subject matter currency and develop/revise curriculum
• Use computer and multimedia technology in instruction
• Engage in collegial participation in departmental, college, and discipline-specific professional activities
• Assess student learning outcomes

Requirements

• Master’s in any biological science; OR
• Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science; OR
• Possession of a valid California Community College credential authorizing full-time teaching of Biology; OR
• Equivalent combination of education, experience, and accomplishments (requires submission of an Application for Equivalence form with supporting documents)
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
• Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (foreign degrees require evaluation by a NACES or ACEI member)

• Broad preparation and depth of knowledge in biological sciences
• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in an innovative, teaching-focused environment
• Experience teaching students with diverse skills, motivations, and goals
• Ability to develop curriculum, including for different modalities (e.g., distance learning)
• Participation in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools and universities
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to maintaining subject matter currency
• Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new instructional technologies
• Understanding of and commitment to the California community college mission

Pay

Starting salary: $67.00 per hour. The hourly rate may vary based on assignment type and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. Refer to the CCA collective bargaining agreement or the college’s HR office for details.
