Bilingual Community Outreach Coordinator

About the role

This bilingual position supports the operations of SLO Food Bank’s direct and partner services and Outreach efforts, increasing awareness of the SLO Food Bank’s network of food resources and CalFresh assistance, and supporting operational excellence and high-quality customer service.

Responsibilities

Community Engagement and Outreach

• Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable representative of the SLO Food Bank, fostering positive relationships with neighbors, volunteers, and community partners.
• Engage with community members at outreach events by setting up welcoming displays and sharing information about food resources and programs available in SLO County.
• Occasionally deliver presentations on SLO Food Bank services to community groups and partners.
• Attend meetings with community groups and social service organizations to promote food resources and programs, share and collect information, and foster collaboration.
• Assist with taking social media photos and videos, and help generate copy that highlights the SLO Food Bank's work and impact.
• Support translation of outreach and program materials from English to Spanish in collaboration with the team, ensuring accuracy and cultural relevance.
• Respond to calls, emails, and in-person requests from community members seeking food assistance and referrals from partners, providing timely and accurate information.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of food benefits information and community services to encourage and support neighbors in completing benefits applications and connecting with appropriate outside resources.
• Provide welcoming, high-quality service to neighbors at SLO Food Bank program sites as assigned, including sign-in and referral support.
• Other supportive duties as assigned.

Data, Survey, & Storytelling Support

• Conduct bilingual interviews and surveys with neighbors to gather information on food insecurity experiences, handling all neighbor data with strict attention to privacy and confidentiality.
• Handle administrative tasks and communication associated with tracking data for grants, surveys, and program evaluation.
• Other supportive duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possesses a valid Driver’s License in the state of residence, clean driving record, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work in-person between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and occasional weekends.
• Advanced proficiency in bilingual (Spanish and English) speaking and writing skills.
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills; the ability to work independently and set priorities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Experience working with volunteers and people from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Strong cultural competence and ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Data-driven mindset with ability to track and report on communication impact.
• Passion for the SLO Food Bank mission and a strong desire to compassionately serve community members.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Associate or bachelor’s degree.

Benefits

• Starting salary of $23.00-25.00 per hour depending on qualifications.
• 10 paid holidays per year.
• 12 paid vacation days per year (vacation accrual escalates based on years of service as detailed in the Employee Handbook).

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

The position is based out of the SLO Food Bank’s offices at 1180 Kendall Road, San Luis Obispo, CA, and works alongside a dedicated group of approximately 37 staff and 1,500 volunteers. The position will require the ability to:

• Stand for extended periods of time.
• See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• Lift, carry, and load up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
• Bend, stoop, climb, and crouch repeatedly throughout the day.
• Stand, walk, and kneel.

Variable work environment: work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with varying environmental conditions in various locations. Indoor facilities are kept at cold temperature, so warm clothing is required. Noise level varies from quiet office environment to very noisy warehouse. Exhaust and dust may be present in the warehouse receiving area.
