The BHUCC Nurse position at Helen Ross McNabb Center offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of individuals navigating mental health challenges and substance abuse issues. This role involves providing direct medical care in a high-stress, fast-paced environment, ensuring the safety and well-being of clients.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with crisis interventions and medical emergencies, obtaining vital signs each shift or more frequently as indicated.
  • Follows and understands CIWA protocol when BAL is above 0.000 and administers correct detox medication per protocol.
  • Communicate with other healthcare professionals during recovery partnership and transition phases, and liaise with other agencies as indicated.
  • Triages referrals, completes LPN intake/assessments on all clients admitted during their shift, obtains urine drug screens, BAL and pregnancy tests on admissions, obtains admission standing orders, dispenses routine and PLPN medications, takes orders from prescriber and updates MAR, completes electronic and paper charting in a timely manner and participates in treatment team meetings when required.
  • LPN is required to contact correct leadership in regard to denials and medical clearance.
  • Performs the initial admission nursing assessment and completes required admission paperwork including nursing assessment, nursing note and nursing admission orders.
  • Update medication tabs, update allergy lists, complete paper MAR, obtain vital signs, urine drug screen, BAL and pregnancy tests upon admission, follow established protocols and guidelines for admission prior to admitting the client to the unit, determine appropriate admission protocols needed for each client, complete C-SSRS on each client, attend to guest and/or client needs during medical emergencies, coordinate with Emergency Departments and EMS, provide simple wound care when indicated, oversee client meals and snacks, complete nursing discharge note, update Admission/Discharge log each time a client is admitted or transitioned from unit, maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, maintain client confidentiality and protect operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff, participate in shift reports, coordinate transitions with other staff, maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all staff members and supervisors, communicate and approach conflict in a problem-solving manner with staff and supervisors, assist Mobile Crisis and Walk in Center when necessary to obtain vital signs on clients being referred to a higher level of care, promote an environment in which cultural diversity and customs, values and beliefs of individuals are respected.
  • Schedule requires 12 hour shifts, rotating weekends, and scheduled holidays. Regular attendance is an essential job function. Must be punctual and maintain a good attendance record. Schedule requires 12 hour shifts. Lift up to 50 lbs. Pushing/pulling up to 250 lbs. Valid driver's license. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. CPR and First Aid certification required (training provided). Required to be certified in and adequately implement verbal de-escalation techniques. Applicants should be able to exercise sound judgement under pressure. Clinical staff may be required to get an F endorsement to transport clients as necessary.

Qualifications

  • LPN with current Tennessee license and experience in psychiatric and alcohol and drug treatment setting preferred.
  • CPR certification or willingness to become certified is required.
  • Sound knowledge of psychiatric and detox medications, diagnoses, treatment modalities and interventions.
  • Experience in working with special populations including individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness and Co-Occurring Disorders preferred.
  • Experience working in a crisis setting preferred.
  • Minimal exposure to biological hazards. Hearing of normal/soft tones and close eye work. Frequent expose to unpleasant odors. Schedule requires 12 hour shifts. Lift up to 50 lbs.
