About the role
The Public Works Superintendent is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the activities of the Public Works Department, including streets, water, wastewater, sanitation, and fleet maintenance. This position ensures the efficient operation and maintenance of all municipal infrastructure and services.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the Public Works Department, including streets, water, wastewater, sanitation, and fleet maintenance.
- Develop, implement, and manage departmental budgets, work plans, and capital improvement projects.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including environmental and safety standards.
- Coordinate with other city departments, contractors, and utility providers to facilitate infrastructure projects.
- Supervise and evaluate department staff, providing training and professional development opportunities.
- Respond to citizen inquiries, complaints, and emergency situations related to public works services.
- Prepare reports and presentations for City Council and other governing bodies.
- Maintain accurate records of department activities, expenditures, and project progress.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public works, engineering, or a related field, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Certification as a Public Works Professional (e.g., APWA) is desirable.

- Proficient in budget preparation, project management, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems, including streets, water, and wastewater.
- Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, and technical documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and public works management software.
