About the role

The Behind the Wheel Instructor (BTWI) ensures new drivers are ready for the road, safely applying their new driving skills. Safety is the company’s top priority, and the BTWI provides critical feedback to management to determine driver readiness. The instructor develops rapport, mentors new drivers, and models safe, efficient, customer‑focused behavior.

Responsibilities

• Acclimates new drivers to the physical and environmental demands of the job during job shadowing.
• Provides foundational industry knowledge, including Republic’s core principles, safety priorities, excellent customer service, and skills‑course activities.
• After virtual safety training, instructs and coaches drivers on on‑property driving skills, stretching and injury‑prevention techniques, and vehicle inspection.
• When comfortable with the new employee’s abilities, continues training on‑route by teaching all applicable learning‑criteria skills based on the line of business and modeling the “Republic Way” of operating a solid‑waste collection vehicle.
• Communicates effectively with the new employee, offering positive feedback and addressing areas needing improvement.
• Provides daily feedback to management on the new employee’s performance.
• Completes required paperwork to document the new employee’s progress.
• Performs a driver’s primary responsibilities (based on CDL class and line of business) when not training a new driver.
• Performs other job‑related duties as assigned or apparent.

Qualifications

• Highly proficient in the equipment style(s) for which they are certified; may be certified on multiple equipment styles.
• Recommended by their supervisor and operations manager.
• Willingness to participate in division processes, including written and verbal evaluations of new‑hire drivers.
• Minimum of two years of experience with Republic Services.
• No crashes or injuries for at least the past two years.
• No disciplinary actions of any kind for the preceding 12 months.
