Behind the Wheel Instructor
About the role
The primary role of the Behind the Wheel Instructor (BTWI) is to ensure new drivers are ready for the road and can safely and effectively apply their new driving skills. With safety as the Company’s number one priority, the BTWI provides critical feedback to management to determine whether drivers are ready to perform their jobs or need additional training. The BTWI must develop rapport and be patient with new drivers, serving as a role model and mentor. The primary goal is to develop new drivers to be safe, efficient, and deliver customer zeal.
Responsibilities
- Acclimates new drivers to the physical and environmental demands of the job during Job Shadowing.
- Provides foundational industry knowledge, including:
- Republic’s core principles and priorities
- Importance of safety on the job
- Significance of providing excellent customer service
- Instructs and coaches drivers through the following after virtual safety training:
- On-property driving skills
- Stretching and Injury Prevention Techniques
- Vehicle Inspection
- Continues training on-route once comfortable with the new employee’s abilities:
- Teaches applicable learning criteria skills based on their line of business.
- Models the Republic Way of operating a solid waste collection vehicle.
- Communicates effectively with new employees, providing positive feedback and addressing areas needing improvement.
- Provides daily feedback to management on the performance of the new employee.
- Completes needed paperwork to document the new employee’s progress.
- Performs a driver’s primary responsibilities, based on CDL Class and line of business, when not training a new driver.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements
- Highly proficient in the equipment style with which they are certified (could be more than one style of equipment).
- Recommended by their supervisor and operations manager.
- Willingness to participate in the process for their Division, including both written and verbal evaluations of new hire drivers.
Qualifications
- Two years of experience with Republic Services.
- No crashes or injuries for at least the past two years.
- No disciplinary actions of any kind for the preceding 12 months.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $27.10 to $37.22, reflecting the minimum wage in multiple jurisdictions. The actual range will depend on the locality in which you are hired.
