About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right beverages and café items. You are also essential to maintaining the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café.

Responsibilities

• Unpack and stock deliveries, tidy the bakes case, and maintain the dining area.
• Operate registers quickly and friendly to ensure professional customer service.
• Demonstrate reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, with flexibility to fill gaps as needed (store hours include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays).
• Maintain a positive, willing, and energetic approach to work, performing tasks with purpose and reliability.
• Support and show kindness to colleagues, assisting the team whenever possible.
• Engage cheerfully with customers, consistently going out of your way to help them.
• Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and knowledge in the store.
• Master operational competencies, including:
  • Using technology such as registers, computers, tablets, and programs efficiently.
  • Developing merchandising skills to maintain café presentation and cleanliness.
  • Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
  • Supporting the receiving, unpacking, and stocking of deliveries.
  • Preparing food and drinks accurately using available tools like recipe guides and spec sheets.
  • Maintaining café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks.
  • Following First In First Out (FIFO) practices and correctly dating products.
  • Assisting the bookfloor team when needed.
  • Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
• Perform physical tasks including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
• Collaborate with the wider team and potentially work in other stores as needed.

Skills & Development

As you gain experience, you will develop expertise in the following areas:

• Building knowledge of café products (beverages, bakery, savory options, and gifting) to maintain attractive and appetizing presentation.
• Supporting key sales objectives, such as new limited-time offers (LTO) or promotions, and sharing this knowledge with customers and colleagues.
• Making effective food and beverage customization recommendations.
• Understanding and executing café retail options.
• Using café training tools appropriately.
• Maintaining café safety, hygiene, sanitation, and procedural standards.
• Advancing to the next career step, Senior Barista, upon demonstrating mastery of these skills.
