About the role
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right beverages and café items. Equally, you are an essential part of the café team in maintaining the attractive presentation and ensuring the efficient running of the Café.
Responsibilities
- Unpack and stock deliveries, tidy the bakes case, and maintain the dining area.
- Operate registers quickly and friendly to provide highly professional service.
- Master operational competencies including:
- Using varied technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs, and other tools) comfortably and efficiently.
- Developing strong merchandising skills to maintain café presentation and cleanliness.
- Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Supporting the receiving, unpacking, and stocking of deliveries.
- Making food and drinks accurately using available tools like drink recipe guides and product spec sheets.
- Maintaining café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks.
- Following First In First Out (FIFO) practices and dating product correctly.
- Supporting the bookfloor team when needed.
- Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
- Engage in physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
- Collaborate with the wider team and potentially work in other stores as needed.
- As you gain experience, develop expertise in:
- Building knowledge of café products (beverage, bakery, savory options, and gifting).
- Maintaining presentation in an interesting and appetizing manner.
- Supporting key sales objectives such as new limited-time offers or promotions.
- Making effective food and beverage customization recommendations.
- Using café training tools appropriately.
- Maintaining café safety, hygiene, sanitation guidelines, and procedures.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Be flexible and responsive to the needs of the store, including working early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Pay
An employee in this position can expect an hourly rate starting at $17.00, depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.
