Barista - Temporary

About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right beverages and café items. You are also essential in maintaining the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café.

Responsibilities

• Unpack and stock deliveries, tidy the bakes case, and maintain the dining area.
• Operate registers quickly and friendly to ensure professional customer service.
• Use varied technology including registers, computers, tablets, and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
• Develop and apply merchandising skills to maintain café presentation and cleanliness.
• Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
• Support receiving, unpacking, and stocking of deliveries accurately and efficiently.
• Prepare food and drinks accurately using available tools such as drink recipe guides and product spec sheets.
• Maintain café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks during your shift.
• Follow and execute First In First Out (FIFO) practices and date products correctly.
• Support the bookfloor team when needed.
• Understand loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identifying theft and addressing problematic behaviors.
• Build knowledge of café products (beverage, bakery, savory, and gifting) to maintain presentation and support sales objectives.
• Make effective food and beverage customization recommendations to customers.
• Use and engage with café training tools appropriately.
• Maintain café safety, hygiene, sanitation guidelines, and procedures.

Requirements

• Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Be flexible and responsive to store needs, including filling scheduling gaps; the store is open early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays.
• Approach work positively and energetically, performing tasks with purpose and reliability.
• Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others in the team.
• Be cheerful and consistently helpful to customers.
• Show willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge.
• Handle physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures.
• Be open to working in other stores if needed.
